RE: Duramax unloaded mileage

I have an 03 DMAX. The best milage I have seen unloaded was 24.5 mpg. I was heading for southern Indiana and drove through Chicago about 10 am ( not the tollroad through Chicago on I94) I hit it just right no traffic and no contruction and rolled through all the way to Indy with out taking the truck off of cruise. My back and forth work trips range any where from 20-22mpg. I have a 22ft HILO camper it weighs loaded at 5000 lbs the best towing has been 20 mpg . I just got back from a 600 mile round trip and got 19 mpg. I drive sedately. I am always within 5 miles an hour of the speed limit and stay to the right. I always use cruise. This truck likes 87 mile an hour so cruise is always on.

RE: please help me with a towing question

Yes
You will have problems.
I have a 22 ft HILO and I had a 1999 F150 4.6 v8, 3.55 rear end. Any grade and it started down shifting. When I was going up to highway speed between 45 and 50 mph I started getting real bad sway to were it was go faster or go slower but not at that speed. I would not recommend the F150 equipt as above. I kind of upgraded to a GMC Duramax Allison combo and I am real happy. I went to a state HILO camp out and talked to some long time HILO owners. I asked about a tow vehicle the answers were all over the place except for two men one was gritting his teeth and another one was real smug. The guy gritting his teeth latter told me his biggest mistake was getting rid of the Diesel pick up, the other guy said go with diesel you will not be sorry . That was 5 years ago and I do not regret getting the DURAMAX. We had planned a trip to the rockies and the F150 would not have made it safely. I have gotten 20 mpg towing on a 500mile trip basically flat 2 lane high way. My usual towing MPG is 17-18 mpg. Of the top of my head I figure my HILO fully loaded for camping is a little over 5000 lbs. I don't have the exact weight handy.

RE: Diesel Newbie needs your opinions

Cowboy.
I tow in D with the tow haul mode on. As far as diesel goes Bio-Diesel is a detergent if you use regular diesel then get a tank of Bio-diesel then the bio-diesel can clean your tank out real good and plug your fuel filter. Any way that is the story around here so I stay away from the stuff. I don't need to change a filter on the side of the road.

RE: Just some thoughts.

BobandPat
It is a GMC. GMC dealer gave me a better deal. Most PSD wonder where the Diesel fumes came from while they are setting on the side of the road. LOL Well the snow is holding off till after midnight. Still 3-5 inches and going to work will be slick. The Wonderful weather of the Frozen Tundra.

RE: Silverstars

I have work third shift in the past. I put them in my truck and they are worth the cost. For me they only last about a year.

RE: Just some thoughts.

Well it is -35 below outside (wind chill) Personel and home safety are important, and people need to think aboutall the time.
I started thinking about some of the winter outings that are going on some where. You can bet there are some Scout troops having a winter campout right now. Plus lots of diehard campers out just for fun. Done that been there and probably will do it again. I was thinking about setting up my 1 pole tent the other day. I have not used that tent in the winter.
Keep warm

Just some thoughts.

After plowing the driveway today I was looking at the camper in the garage and thought I would add somethings to the board.
1. Is it really a good idea to tell the world that you and your family are leaving for a 3 week camping trip then have your name and address in your member profile?
2. If you are new to camping read all the forums you can learn a lot.
3. When you are in the dump station line don't leave your rig to go swimming.
4. "Not Pottable Water" means don't drink it, use in cooking or cleaning.
5. I have had ford, Chevy, Dodge, and GMC trucks. In my humble opinion GMC/ Chevy is the best.
6. I have had gas engines and diesel engines. As long as I can afford to by one I will never go back to gas. There just is no comparison.
7. THANK YOU DAD for teaching me how to change a tire when I was a kid. It really help when the trailer tire blew out.
8. It is never a good idea to use gas or Coleman fuel to start a campfire!
9. Help the new people it will come back and pay for it self many times over.
10. There are 50 states and numerous territories in this great Country we live in. If you don't like where you live move, Life is to short to be unhappy.
One last thing. LET IT SNOW

RE: New to Diesel - Cold Weather Starting Question

Wilburg you have a pigtail you just have to find it. Mine was tywrapped under the air filter box. It took the dealer 10 minutes before he found it. There is barely enough cord to reach the radiator though.

RE: Good & Bad on 2003 Silverado 2500HD Crew 4x4 Duramax

I bought mine in Dec. 02. I have over 125,000 miles on it. New injectors on the dealer. Great truck and tows great. I have gotten 20 mpg towing on flat land.
My usual mpg is 16 or 17 mpg. My Hilo weighs in at approx 5500lbs, so there is not really a load on the truck. Mpg on trips with out the camper I have gotten 24+mpg in the summer time. I set the cruise one time going down the length on Illinois with the camper and never had a change of speed or shifting of the tranny till I got off for fuel. One problem though SHE really like 87 mph and will run up there any chance She gets even with the camper hitched up.

RE: New to Diesel - Cold Weather Starting Question

I have a 2003 GMC with the duramax. 125000 miles on her. I work third shift so she sets out all night not plugged in. The coldest I have seen since I have had the truck was -17 F. She did not like it when I started the truck but she ran on the first try idled ruff for about 5 minutes. The only problem I have had is bad injectors at 115000 miles then the truck would not start below 50 F. Dealer replaced them and I am back to normal. As far as ideling before i go I let the trucks voltage gauge return to normal before i drive off usually about 1 or 2 minutes
